If you’ve ever used AI and thought, “This is… okay, but not amazing,” you’re not alone. The difference between average and incredible results often comes down to how you use it.
Good news: it’s not complicated.
Better news: most people are doing it wrong.
Let’s fix that.
First, be specific. Vague prompts lead to vague answers. Instead of saying, “Write me an article about AI,” try something like, “Write a 600-word article explaining how AI is changing small businesses, using simple language and real-world examples.”
See the difference?
You’re giving the AI direction, constraints, and context.
Second, use roles. Telling the AI to “act as” something can dramatically improve output. For example, “Act as a startup advisor” or “Act as a cybersecurity expert.”
This helps the model frame its response more effectively.
Third, iterate. Your first result doesn’t have to be your final result. Ask follow-up questions, request revisions, and refine the output.
Think of it as a conversation, not a one-shot command.
Fourth, provide examples. If you want a specific tone or format, show the AI what you mean. Even a short sample can guide the output in the right direction.
This is especially useful for writing tasks.
Fifth, break down complex requests. Instead of asking for everything at once, split it into steps. For example: outline first, then expand each section.
This often leads to higher-quality results.
Sixth, use constraints. Word counts, tone requirements, formatting rules—these all help shape the output. The more clearly you define what you want, the better the AI can deliver it.
Finally, don’t assume the AI is always right. It’s powerful, but not perfect. Double-check important information, especially for technical or factual content.
Trust, but verify.
The biggest mindset shift? Treat AI like a tool, not magic. It’s incredibly capable, but it still needs guidance.
The people getting the best results aren’t necessarily more technical. They’re just more intentional.
They know what they want, and they know how to ask for it.
And now, so do you.
